Up a level

Well, yesterday my instructor suggested that I move up to a more advanced level, and today I had my first class in the intermediate group. It was a great suggestion from the teacher, and I know I made the right decision. There is just enough French that I don’t understand in the new class to make me strive to learn more. My friend Peter and I are now in the same group.

Phew!

It was like getting hit with a ton of bricks today. Very hard to keep up for beginners, but I know from experience that this is exactly how language is learned. Confusion stimulates the brain and things slowly start to make sense. I love it, but I am tired.

Not to worry

We officially swore to use French only. Unfortunately, I still have to keep the posts in English.

In a conversation with Peter, Jake put it very well this evening. He told Peter, “This is exactly what our parents had to go through, only in reverse order.”

This is a challenging start, but the plan is to work even harder tomorrow.

Arrived safely in Trois-Rivières

Good evening dear friends!

Along with two other students from Maine (wonderful surprise) we arrived in Trois-Rivières, QC to begin a French immersion course at Ecole Internationale de français.

There are some images and video I would like to share from the arrival day, but unfortunately I am running out of time. The plan is to jog every morning, so I must get up early to be able to run and share the shower with three other roommates.

In a short period of time I got a chance to get acquainted with Maine’s Jake and Peter, John from South Carolina, Jorge from Mexico, Francisco from Brazil, Megan from Halifax, and a Québec rapper Loublan (Sylvain Leblanc).

This blog may become such a chore since it’s hard to document passed events when they are happening so fast, but I will do my very best to post as much content from this experience as possible. This may mean that posts will be delayed. I hope you understand.

Thank you for visiting!

P.S.Nothing but French will be allowed tomorrow. There is no better way to learn a new language but to be forced to speak it.

Bike Ride

There are eight free bikes for four hundred students on campus. The chances of getting a hold of one are very slim. However, I did get to borrow one tonight. This lead me to an accidental acquaintance with two great Québécois Sylvain and Jenny.
